National Medicare Education Program (NMEP)

National Medicare Education Program (NMEP)

The National Medicare Education Program (NMEP) was established to implement provisions of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 and continues under the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003.  Its focus is to enlist national and local organizations to support and participate in educating the public about the Health Insurance Marketplace, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program,  as well as, Medicare. Participants in NMEP meetings include beneficiary advocacy organizations, the health care industry, employers and benefits administrators, government agencies, providers and general consumer and issue groups. Together with CMS, these national partners reach out to other organizations at the state and local levels. They, in turn, work with Medicare beneficiaries, and other interested organizations and individuals, to help them better understand CMS programmatic changes. Half-day meetings are held quarterly in Washington, D.C.
